Welcome to Greene County, Virginia!
One of the smallest counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Greene is one of the most picturesque.
Located in the north-central part of the state just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park, it is just about 20 miles north from downtown Charlottesville, home to the University of Virginia and the hub of the region’s economic and cultural activity.
But Greene County is rural in nature, with its 18,500 people settled into planned neighborhoods, historic homes in and around the quaint county seat of Stanardsville, or out in “the country” – which includes nearly 20 tiny unincorporated communities that came into being back in the days of horses and buggies, as well as lone farmhouses surrounded by rolling fields and forests.
Here, real estate is reasonably priced, supervisors make every effort to keep taxes low, the public school district boasts real one-on-one interaction with students, and there is an authentic community spirit that binds residents together.
People wave to each other as they pass. They know each other’s names and relationships are personal. They come together to bring college centers and parks to the county; to raise funds for causes, and to maintain a community that is economically sound, stimulating, safe, and nurturing, where children play outside on quiet streets free from worry.
Greene County is a place where people can find gourmet foods, produce fresh from the farm, go wine- tasting or apple-picking, hunt bear, deer, turkey or grouse, or cast a line into one of the county’s three rivers and 15 lakes, where healthy populations of brook and brown trout abound.
It is home to gourmet and family restaurants as well as church suppers, community parades and school plays – and it welcomes newcomers with open arms.
